The President’s Cake – (12A) Iraq/Quatar/US 2025.
Directed by Hasan Hadi.
In 1990s Iraq a nine year-old girl earns the dubious honour of baking President Saddam’s birthday cake, but the country is in such a parlous state she has trouble finding ingredients. Facing punishment if she should fail, Lamia grows increasingly desperate. This micro-portrait of a dysfunctional country won the Directors’ Fortnight Audience Award at Cannes last year. (105 minutes).
