Meirelles/Lund’s film certainly channelled Do the Right Thing and La haine, but heralded
a new decade of Latin American cinema with a scruff-of-the-neck urgency and directness
for which the Cinema Novo of the 60s offered little preparation. City of God deals with life
among the favelas of Rio de Janeiro through the eyes of a budding young photographer.
